Restoring water in our data center communities
Water is a shared and vital resource — and at Meta, we take our role as water stewards seriously. Our water restoration program is one of the most tangible ways we give back to the communities where we operate.
Every watershed is unique
No two watersheds face the same challenges. That is why we start by working with local communities, nonprofits, utilities, and policy experts to understand and address the water needs unique to each region.
When Meta expanded its data center in Los Lunas, New Mexico, we heard directly from the community about the importance of protecting local water resources. That same mindset guides our restoration work at every data center location.
Restoring water where it matters most
Today, Meta supports over 60 water restoration projects across 12 watersheds. Once fully implemented, these projects will restore over 6 billion gallons of water annually.
In 2024 alone, our projects helped restore 1.6 billion gallons of water in some of the country’s highest-risk watersheds.
In the Rio Grande watershed, we have invested in eight restoration projects that together restore over 172 million gallons of water a year. One of those projects reconnects a previously eroded stream with its natural floodplain by building beaver dam analogs — structures that mimic natural beaver dams to slow water down, create habitat, and allow it to infiltrate into the groundwater.
Restoring more than we use
Meta has set a global goal to be water positive in 2030 — meaning we will restore more water than we consume in the watersheds where we operate. It is a commitment that drives our team every day.
“Being able to come to Meta, at the scale we operate — when I go to the communities and see the positive impact, it puts a smile on my face. It makes me proud to work here.” Tom Birmingham, Water Team Lead
We are also committed to transparency. We share our water consumption data in our annual sustainability report, assured by independent third parties, so our communities and stakeholders can track our progress.
