Water

Protecting and restoring a vital resource

Water is a shared and vital resource, and we approach water stewardship with the responsibility and technical expertise it deserves.

Water stewardship

Our water stewardship program is focused on:

Increasing data center water efficiency

We minimize water use in our data centers by design and use water as efficiently as possible in our operations. We are proud to constantly innovate to make our data centers more water efficient.

Our fleet of operational data centers prioritizes on-site water efficiency in a number of ways, including:

  • Using outside air, where climate permits, to directly cool servers with low to no water usage for the majority of the year
  • Recycling water multiple times through our cooling and humidification system in all of our data centers
  • Optimizing humidity and temperature setpoints to reduce water consumption
  • Using AI to optimize data center cooling operations, reducing both energy and water use

The cooling technology for each data center is based on local climatic and environmental conditions, and our typical one-gigawatt AI-optimized data center design — the first of which will be operational later in 2026 — uses a closed-loop liquid cooling system with dry coolers. They house denser server racks, also allowing us to have a smaller physical footprint while serving a similar capacity compared to our previous data center design.

Water restoration and conservation projects

Our goal is to become water positive in 2030, meaning we aim to restore 200% of consumption in high-water-stress regions and 100% of consumption in medium-water-stress regions. To support this goal, we are investing in water restoration and conservation projects with community partners that restore local habitats, boost water supply and reliability, enhance water quality and provide safe drinking water.

Highlight — New Mexico water restoration projects

Meta supports water restoration projects that address shared water challenges in the communities in which we operate. In New Mexico, Meta is supporting water restoration projects through partnerships with local environmental organizations working to improve the health of the Rio Grande watershed.

2025 Sustainability Report

As we continue to build the future of human connection and the technology that makes it possible, we strive to do so in a way that supports a more sustainable world. Our annual Sustainability Report outlines our efforts to minimize the impact of our energy and water usage, address emissions in our value chain, forge partnerships that drive innovation, and transparently report on our annual energy and water consumption.
