RESPONSIBLE ENERGY USE

We are committed to helping strengthen electric grids

Supporting a clean and reliable grid is key to empowering communities, the economy and innovation.

Responsible energy use

Data centers use a lot of energy. Meta pays the full costs for the energy used by our data centers so consumers aren’t paying our costs, and we work closely with utilities and project developers to plan for and meet our energy needs years in advance of them coming online.

Energy efficiency

We design data centers with efficiency, flexibility and sustainability in mind. Our vision blends high-performance and energy-efficient computing with a mix of custom hardware solutions specific to the unique needs of our environment. We’re proud to have initiated the Open Compute Project back in 2011, which was the first open-source hardware initiative to help make data centers more efficient, scalable and sustainable by sharing innovations with the industry. Over the last 15 years, we’ve shared hundreds of innovations on energy and water efficiency in computing technologies.

Energy optimization through digital modeling

We use AI to advance energy efficiency and broader environmental stewardship in our data centers, like our digital twin representations of data center cooling systems. These models provide detailed insight into current and projected operating conditions, supporting capacity planning, compliance monitoring, and the prioritization of water and efficiency projects.

Strengthening the grid

We are committed to helping strengthen the grid by supporting the addition of new energy sources and grid modernization. This includes helping pay for new and upgraded grid infrastructure, like substations and transmission lines, that benefit all consumers, and enabling new energy resources to be added to the grid through our agreements with utilities and energy companies, as well as our additional voluntary clean energy purchases. Clean energy projects backed by Meta will add nearly 29 gigawatts to the grid across seven countries and 27 U.S. states, with nearly 12 gigawatts already producing energy. This includes supporting up to 7.7 gigawatts of nuclear energy in the U.S.

These investments represent billions in domestic capital energy investments and hundreds of energy jobs.

Supporting new clean technologies

Our investment in nuclear technologies supports American jobs and a robust and reliable grid, and helps the U.S. maintain energy and economic leadership. It is part of our continuous commitment to advancing technologies that will build the future of human connection, including the next wave of AI innovation.
Our agreements with Constellation, Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo make Meta one of the most significant corporate purchasers of nuclear energy in American history. These projects add new clean and reliable energy to the grid and help preserve operating nuclear plants. We’ve also partnered with Sage Geosystems and XGS Energy to support advanced geothermal energy in the U.S.
