Hello, Kansas City!
Today, Meta is proud to announce its newest data center will be in Kansas City! Our data centers are the physical backbone of our products, and represent a significant infrastructure investment and economic impact in the community. Upon completion, the data center will represent an investment of more than $800 million and will support approximately 100 jobs. In addition, we anticipate over 1,300 construction workers will be onsite at peak.
Kansas City stood out as a great location for our newest data center for several reasons. The shovel-ready site, the accessible infrastructure and fiber, the deep well of local talent for operations and construction, and collaborative community partners have helped us move this project forward quickly.
Meta is a positive contributor to the cities in which we live and work and we are committed to hiring, buying, and sourcing locally whenever possible. A recent independent study found that for every $1 million in data center capital expenditures, there were 14 jobs supported in the area. For every $1 million in data center operating expenditures, there were 18 jobs supported.
Our community contribution also includes investing in renewable energy. We worked with our utility partner, Evergy, to develop a new market-based tariff that will allow us and other customers to contract for new renewable energy in support of our sustainability goals. Our data centers are among the most advanced and water- and energy-efficient data center facilities in the world. This data center will be at least 80% more water-efficient than the average data center. Our water sipping cooling system relies on outside air, not water, for cooling for at least 50% of the year.
Meta is proud to work alongside our community partners including the State of Missouri, City of Kansas City, Missouri Partnership, Kansas City Area Development Council, Evergy, and Missouri Department of Economic Development. We’re thrilled to have found a home in Kansas City and look forward to strong partnerships in the years to come.
