Henrico County, We Are Online!

We are excited to announce that our Henrico Data Center in Virginia is now serving traffic. That means that this data center is now helping bring Facebook apps and services to billions of people around the world.

Since we broke ground in 2017, we have worked hard to be good neighbors. Earlier this year, when the impacts of COVID-19 were beginning to be felt, we partnered with Henrico County Public Schools and the Henrico Education Foundation to provide meals for students and their families and Wi-Fi hotspots for students to help them complete their schoolwork from home. We also partnered with ChamberRVA and the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond to provide relief grants to small businesses and nonprofits in the community.

The Henrico Data Center is supported by 100% solar energy from projects here in Virginia. We have contracted to bring over 500 MWs of new solar energy to the Virginia grid. In fact, Facebook is one of the largest contributors to renewable energy in the state and one of Dominion Energy’s top partners for renewables in the Commonwealth. Our projects have resulted in hundreds of construction jobs in the area.

Once fully built, this facility will represent an investment of more than $1 billion in the Commonwealth of Virginia and support over 200 jobs. The 2.5 million-square-foot campus has had over 1,500 construction workers on site at peak. And, as of today, we have been able to recycle over 80% of the project’s construction waste instead of sending it to landfills.

This fall, we will launch our Community Action Grants program, which provides grants to help address needs in the community by putting the power of technology to use for community benefit, connecting people online and off, and improving STEM education. Henrico County has been a great location for our newest data center. We are thankful to our partners at Henrico County, Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Henrico Economic Development Authority, White Oak Technology Park, and many more for helping us become part of this community. We look forward to continuing to strengthen these partnerships for years to come!
