We are so happy to announce that our Odense Data Center is online and serving traffic. This data center is now part of the highly-advanced infrastructure that helps bring Facebook apps and services to you every day. It is also one of the most advanced energy-efficient data center facilities in the world; it is supported by 100% wind energy.

This construction represents millions of hours of work by an average of 1,800 workers on site daily at peak. In 2018, our demand for construction services accounted for 1.1% of all sales activity in Denmark’s construction sector. Through our health and safety program, we achieved four million man-hours of work without a reportable incident. And as part of our commitment to the community, we employed more than 130 previously unemployed Fyn residents.

This data center will also provide heating for the Odense community through a new heat recovery system. Operated by Fjernvarme Fyn, this infrastructure will capture the excess heat generated by our servers and recycle it into the local district heating system. We anticipate that, once operational, it will enable the recovery of 100,000 MWh of energy per year, producing enough heat to warm 6,900 homes here in Odense.

We are excited to be part of the Odense community and we are committed to investing in its long-term vitality. Today, we are announcing that we are partnering with Odense Kommune to support their World Best Robot City strategy. This initiative will help ensure that by investing in Odense’s children, the city will continue to be a leader in the area of robotics. We are also announcing that we are supporting the Carl Nielsen Park to complete their community amphitheater and build a new maker lab for kids. Finally, in the autumn, we will launch our Community Action Grants Programme. These grants provide funding to schools and qualifying organizations who support innovative programs including those strengthening science, technology, engineering and math education. We encourage schools and not-for-profit organizations in the Odense Kommune to apply!

Since we broke ground in 2017, Odense has been our home. We appreciate the help and support of our partners in the community and look forward to continuing our strong partnership!
